“Sudoku with a Secret — Volume 1: Crack the Keeper’s Vault” is a 200-puzzle sudoku book with a hidden layer. Twenty of the puzzles hide a single shaded square. Collect those digits, decode them with the table printed in the back, and the words they spell open a sealed vault on the book’s website — plus a hidden fourth word for the truly obsessive. The website part is optional; every puzzle stands on its own, with its answer in the back.

If you’ve ever lost an afternoon to a good puzzle, so has Dan Herlehy — ever since he was a kid working the tangled metal puzzle his father gave him. New puzzles came every birthday and every holiday, and he never outgrew them.

In his twenties he turned scavenger hunts into a kind of art, hiding clues across his whole town and sending friends chasing them all day. An industrial engineer by training and a lifelong lover of ciphers, codes and mysteries, he spent years wondering why a puzzle book always had to end on its last page.

Sudoku with a Secret is his answer: 200 original sudoku puzzles with an escape room buried inside them. Twenty of the puzzles hide a key. A cipher printed in the back turns those keys into words. Each word opens a sealed vault online. It is the book he wishes someone had handed a younger Dan.

He lives in western New York, where he is currently building the next four vaults.

Volume 1 opens the series. The Keeper is waiting.

My Thoughts

Shared a puzzle giveaway on my blog, so the author of Sudoku with a Secret reached out to me and asked if I would like a different kind of puzzle. Being disabled some days, I can barely move around, especially if I am having a dystonia flare-up, so I do all sorts of puzzles. I’m currently working on a 1,500-piece glow-in-the-dark Halloween puzzle. Love me a good puzzle.

This book is solving a puzzle in a whole different way. Using numbers, you solve these. Very different; it had my mind working in a new, unique way. Love that it has a site you can go to help you out. It’s a hidden escape room that, by solving the 200 Sudokus that range from easy to hard, you get the code to open the keeper’s vault. Intrigued? Yep, I know, right? I was. It was a little bit tricky for me to get my mind around because it’s numbers, but once I got it. I had a good time working on the puzzles. Love that there is an interactive website. This Sudoku book has 200 puzzles, 3 vaults & one hidden password. Sign up on the site to get free puzzles every month! How cool is that? A great way to keep your mind entertained this winter!
