Author Interview
Q & A with Nabila Khashoggi: Stories from the Kitchen and Beyond
Q1: If your cookbook were a travel souvenir, what would it be?
A: Definitely a colorful, slightly overstuffed passport: one that smells faintly of cinnamon, coffee, and garlic. The kind of souvenir that makes you want to tell stories the moment you pull it out.
Q2: What was the most surprising thing you learned while creating this cookbook?
A: That you can accidentally spend three hours “researching” recipes online and realize you’ve actually just been drooling over food photos. It’s a legitimate occupational hazard. That’s why it took literally 8 years to complete it!
Q3: Do you have a favorite time of day to cook?
A: Early evening, when the day is winding down and the kitchen feels like the coziest room in the house. That’s when I put on some music, pour a glass of something, and let the aromas build while conversations start to flow.
Q4: If you could cook one meal from the book for the Spartan & the Green Egg characters, what would it be?
A: I’d make a big, shareable Middle Eastern feast: hummus, tabbouleh, warm pita, grilled kebabs. I think they’d appreciate a meal where everyone gets to dig in together, and maybe we’d even trade adventure stories over dessert.
Q5: What’s one “shortcut” ingredient you swear by?
A: Pre-washed, pre-chopped herbs. I know, I know, purists will gasp. But sometimes, having fresh cilantro ready to go is the difference between cooking a great dinner and ordering takeout.
Q6: What’s your go-to mood booster recipe from the cookbook?
A: The Farshyrovanyy Chornoslyv. Which is pronounced: Far-shuh-rovany Chore-nos-lehv. The sheer decadence, the colors, the flavors, it’s like happiness in a bowl. You can’t make it without feeling instantly happier (and a little hungrier).
Q7: If you could give one piece of advice to someone about to open The Explorer’s Cookbook for the first time, what would it be?
A: Treat it like a travel itinerary: pick your “destination,” gather your “supplies,” and don’t be afraid to wander off the path a little. Some of the best adventures happen when you take a wrong turn.
