There were still things to do before she could deliver the quilt. She wanted it waiting when he woke—private, quiet, meaningful. Maybe it would matter more that way. Or maybe—her stomach tightened—she wasn’t ready to face him. Not with her heart this exposed.
Her fingers trembled as she wrapped the quilt in brown craft paper, smoothing the edges and creasing the corners with her thumbnail. The twine bit gently into her palm as she looped it twice and cinched the knot tight. She paused with the pen over the small quilt-block card, then wrote.
It’s not about mending what is broken. It’s about honoring what survived. —D.
Her handwriting looked small and unsure, but she tucked the card into an envelope and threaded the twine through it. It felt like tying a piece of herself to the package.
