The clerk shifted, tugging at his crooked bow tie as if it might save him. “Um, about the pool. Sorry, but it’s off-limits until tomorrow. There’s a big charity event tonight—Mermaid core designs, raising money for a women’s shelter. Fashion show, swanky party in Palm Beach after, the whole bit.”
Reaching under the counter, he located a full-color brochure and pushed it toward me. The headline screamed: Fashion for Compassion. A collage of photos illustrated young women posing for the camera. The paper was slick, and the tri-fold piece included snippets of praise from local media, highlighting the fact this was a charity event.
Trevor continued, “Unfortunately, the show will happen in our courtyard pool area, so it’s off-limits to our guests.Temporarily, of course. But don’t worry—we’re giving you an extra day free to make up for it.” He pushed a coupon across the counter.
The “free night” was a nice gesture, but it wasn’t going to help my two active boys. We’d been traveling since five thirty a.m., and they were both bouncing like pinballs here in the foyer of the resort’s hotel. I forced a smile. “That’s all right. We’ll take the kids to Bathtub Beach. I’ve heard it’s perfect for little ones.”
The clerk winced. “Typically, yes. Unfortunately, there’s an algae bloom right now. Perfectly fine to play on the sand, but I wouldn’t recommend going in the water.”
“Algae bloom?” Anya asked, wide-eyed.
